Inspect audio and preview speech
Open AUDIO after configuring your audio devices. The workspace shows the audio inside Radio Bench. It cannot measure the radio's RF output.
Choose the displayed source
Select Auto, RX, or TX above the instruments. Auto follows receive or transmit activity. RX and TX keep the display on the selected path.
Live means fresh samples are arriving. No recent audio means the retained display is stale. No audio means no samples are available for that subject.
Read the instruments
| Instrument | What to look for | Display controls |
|---|---|---|
| Spectrum | Audio frequencies, passband edges, unwanted tones, and broad noise | Smooth, Range, and marker visibility. |
| Waterfall | How those audio frequencies change over time | Time span, Floor, Range, and markers. |
| Oscilloscope | Waveform shape, peaks, and flat-topped clipping | Time window, Range (dBFS), Zero line, Clip warning, and Peak / RMS levels. |
Use the display menu in each plot header. A longer time window reveals slower changes. A shorter window reveals individual waveform cycles.
At a 0 dBFS oscilloscope range, the edges represent digital full scale. A tighter display range magnifies quiet audio. Reaching a magnified display edge alone does not establish clipping.
Peak measures brief maxima. RMS describes average signal level. Persistent clip warnings require checking the gain before the measured point.
Reset display restores display defaults while retaining your RX/TX source selection. Display controls do not adjust audio gain or processing.
Understand the TX subject
The label changes with the signal under examination.
| Label | Signal shown | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| TX MIC | Raw microphone capture while recording a preview | Processed speech quality or TX output level. |
| TX | Processed audio during ordinary voice TX or preview playback | RF power, ALC, modulation quality at the radio, or physical keying. |
| TX SPEECH | Speech entering the RADE encoder, after input conditioning and before clipping | Encoded modem output or the effect of TX output gain. |
| TX TEST | Output test tone | Microphone or speech-processing performance. |
Passband markers apply to processed TX audio. They do not describe raw microphone capture, the RADE speech input, or the test tone.
Compare speech processing
TX mic preview works with USB, LSB, AM, and FM. It records up to 15 seconds and plays through your selected RX output.
Preview does not assert CAT PTT or use the selected TX output. Confirm that RX output goes to headphones or speakers. Routing RX output into a radio can still trigger external VOX.
- Select an analog voice mode and open
AUDIO. - Select
RecordbesideTX mic preview. - Speak a short sentence at your usual microphone distance.
- Select
Finish, or allow the 15-second limit to finish the take. - Listen as the take starts playing through the processing chain.
- Select
Loopto repeat it while adjustingTX AUDIOcontrols. - Compare one change at a time, then select
Stop.
Select Play to hear the retained take again. The preview volume changes listening level independently of TX output level.
Start with modest input gain and no compression. Compare noise reduction, bass, treble, compression, and the available transmit filter controls. See transmit setup for their locations.
Preview Record is separate from Audio/IQ WAV recording. The preview take is a temporary comparison sample, not a saved station recording.
